Inclusion & neurodiversity
Empowering every learner through thoughtful design

Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) learning spaces are built around the understanding that every learner comes to school with different histories or needs and thereofore experiences the world differently. These environments must go beyond standard classroom design, offering spaces that prioritise individualisation, safety, sensory balance, accessibility, and emotional wellbeing.

Sensory environments that promote calm and focus

Be it indoor or outdoor, the physical environments of Special Schools significantly impact the wellbeing and learning outcomes of students with additional needs. So we consider every detail: acoustics, lighting, colour palettes, and material finishes all essential to reduce overstimulation and create a sense of calm. We prioritise sensory-aware design principles, incorporating quiet rooms, soft furnishings, controlled lighting, and clear visual cues that support regulation and independence.

  • Designing for individual needs and personalised learning

Most importantly, these spaces must prioritize the unique needs of each student, from neurodiverse learners to those with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) or trauma experiences. Every individual who crosses the threshold brings specific practical requirements that guide our designs but without preventing us creating beautiful, therapeutic environments that thoughtfully support cognitive, sensory, physical, and emotional well-being.

  • One size does not fit all

Every detail, from the acoustic design to circulation planning, has to support a wide spectrum of learning and therapy needs. So we work closely with leadership teams and specialist staff to craft environments that enable personalised approaches to learning, from structured teaching layouts to flexible breakout areas. Thoughtful space planning and design detailing ensures that students feel safe, supported, and empowered to engage at their own pace, while giving educators the tools to deliver highly individualised programmes with confidence.

  • In-school inclusion bases

These same skills and design principles are used too in in-school spaces so every child has access to a learning environment that supports rather than overwhelms them. Designed with SEND at their heart, they support both the therapeutic and practical development of learners, allowing for both structured interventions as well as everyday learning. These carefully curated spaces allow multidisciplinary teams including teachers, therapists, and support staff to work collaboratively in nurturing each student’s academic progress and personal growth.
