CASE STUDY

A specialist setting for SEMH learners
Egham Park School is a specialist independent school in Egham, Surrey, supporting 11–16‑year‑olds with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. With a current maximum of just ten pupils, it offers a low‑arousal, flexible setting tailored to each student’s individual requirements, often providing a lifeline for those experiencing emotional‑based school avoidance. Its curriculum blends online and offline learning, enabling students to access lessons from school or home. Led by Principal Mrs Nicki Foster, the school promotes respect, kindness and personal growth, preparing learners for future education, training or reintegration into mainstream settings.
The new layout brings clarity and comfort to daily routines, creating a setting where students can engage with learning without the pressures often found in traditional school environments.
A calm, therapeutic space designed to help every learner feel safe, supported and ready to grow.
Expanding capacity while preserving the ethos
Refurbishing Egham Park School’s new building presented a unique challenge in both scale and sensitivity. The transition from a ten‑pupil provision to a facility designed for up to 45 students required reimagining every aspect of the environment—from classroom flow and circulation to external access and safeguarding. Crucially, this expansion had to be achieved without compromising the therapeutic, low‑arousal ethos that underpins the school’s SEMH support. The project demanded a careful balance between increased capacity and the preservation of a calm, nurturing atmosphere.

A considered, SEMH‑aligned refurbishment
Metric delivered a thoughtful and practical refurbishment solution that aligned educational functionality with the school’s specialist SEMH approach. The project involved reconfiguring internal spaces across three floors to improve flow and create environments that support therapeutic learning. Key upgrades included new kitchens, bathrooms and fire safety systems, alongside structural adjustments to enhance accessibility. Throughout the building, Metric balanced durability with warmth—combining new products with high‑quality used items to create a welcoming atmosphere while accommodating future growth.
Transforming the building into a therapeutic learning space
Metric transformed the three‑storey building into a calm, adaptable learning environment for up to 45 pupils. The ground floor now features reconfigured partition walls, a welcoming archway and a fully equipped kitchen, supported by essential upgrades such as new lighting, fire doors, alarms and plumbing. Additional improvements included a First Aid room, refreshed interiors and carefully selected reused furnishings. Externally, artificial grass, timber decking and protective fencing create a secure, soothing outdoor space. The upper floors received specialist enhancements, including a soundproof exam room, kitchenettes and a partitioned office area—resulting in a multi‑functional, therapeutic setting ready to welcome students.
