Creating a warm, natural learning environment
Metric worked with Cherry Tree Nursery & Preschool to create a beautiful, warm and nurturing space that reflects the setting’s natural approach to early learning. Using detailed 3D plans as a guide, the design focused on calm, clearly defined learning areas that support children’s independence and curiosity. Cherry Tree wanted a layout that felt organic and intuitive, with spaces that flowed naturally and encouraged exploration without overstimulation.

Designing spaces that support growth and independence
The brief included a wide range of purposeful zones: a cosy nook with integrated book storage, a dedicated sleep area with bedding, an investigative space, role‑play provision, and arts and crafts areas. Tables and chairs at different heights - with safety arms for babies and toddlers - were incorporated to help children develop independence as they grow. Every element was chosen to balance safety, comfort and the freedom to learn through movement and play.
Thoughtful details that enhance daily routines
To complement the interior scheme, Metric supplied bespoke rugs in the nursery’s signature cherry‑red palette, each finished with heavy rubber safety edging for durability and stability. A mobile cloakroom unit was also introduced, giving parents easy access during busy morning drop‑offs and helping children develop simple self‑care routines. These practical touches support the smooth running of the day while reinforcing the nursery’s warm, welcoming identity.
A space that nurtures, calms and inspires
The completed environment makes the most of the room’s natural light, creating a soothing atmosphere that avoids overstimulation while encouraging freedom to explore. Loose furniture allows staff to adapt the layout to the ever‑changing needs of learning and ability, ensuring the space remains flexible and responsive. This aligns with Cherry Tree Nursery & Preschool’s long‑established ethos: since its founding in 2004, the setting has been committed to providing a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for children from infancy to age five. Guided by the GIRFEC approach, the team fosters confidence, independence and curiosity through spacious rooms, freshly prepared meals and a well‑equipped outdoor area - all contributing to a holistic, child‑centred experience.
