CASE STUDY

Heritage and founding purpose
Lord Wandsworth College was founded in 1922 through the bequest of philanthropist Sydney Stern, whose vision was to educate children who had lost a parent, particularly those from agricultural backgrounds. This founding purpose established a legacy of care, opportunity and social responsibility that continues to shape the College’s ethos today.
This is more than just a building or a garden, it’s a place where LWC’s values are lived every day through care, wellbeing and the chance for every pupil to reach their potential.
Elevating support for neurodiverse learners through thoughtful, biophilic design.
A thriving educational community
Over the past century, the College has grown into a highly respected co‑educational independent boarding and day school set within 1,200 acres of Hampshire countryside. Known for strong academics, exceptional pastoral care and a deep sense of community, it consistently achieves excellent exam results and national recognition. Its extensive estate includes an 850‑acre working farm, broad woodlands and world‑class sports facilities, creating a rich and varied environment for learning and personal development.

A new approach to additional learning needs
Like all schools, Lord Wandsworth supports students with additional learning needs. Rather than tutoring or counselling pupils in isolated rooms, the College sought to bring them together in a dedicated centre designed specifically for their wellbeing. The brief called for sensory, calming and restorative spaces that also respected individual privacy. Equally important was creating an environment where staff could collaborate, share best practice and support one another in delivering high‑quality provision.
Designing a calm, biophilic environment
Reflecting on the completed project, Lidia Pocock, Director of Estates, explained that the aim was to create a space pupils feel genuinely comfortable visiting—one that honours the heritage of the building while offering a calm, supportive atmosphere. Biophilic design plays a central role, with oxygenating plants and natural materials introducing a sense of life, warmth and wellbeing. At the same time, the environment is crafted to inspire teachers, providing a setting that elevates their daily work and reinforces the College’s commitment to inclusive, thoughtful education.
